UCI
EMERITAE/I ASSOCIATION MINUTES -- February 7, 2005
Present: Julian
Feldman, Dick Franks, Ann Heiney, Judd Hubert, Renée Hubert ,
Duncan Luce, Julian Margolis, Sam McCulloch, Ron Miller,
Kivie Moldave, Bob Montgomery, Lorie Reed, John Swett, Jerry Tobis
Minutes: The
December minutes were approved with corrections: The date was December 6, 2004. The
Foundation balance in our treasury was $1511.38. The last sentence under "Newsletter
Editor" should read "The next newsletter
might also note the availability of identification cards for spouses of emeritae/i all of whom are considered members of the
UCIEA". Under new
business the word "Governor" should be capitalized.
Treasurer's report: The
balance is slightly more than $2000, but we have not yet paid for the December
social, for which revenues were $740, outlay
$890. Jerry Tobis stated it would be
helpful when newsletters are sent to emeritae/i to have a way of informing them whether or not
their dues have been paid. Lorie
Reed recalled this had been discussed in
December, and again Ann Heiney
and Bob Montgomery
are asked to report in March so that the subsequent newsletter
could be used to inform Emeritae/i of their dues status.
Kivie
Moldave reported dues at UCLA are $12.50,
but their annual social is paid for by administration. Both Riverside
and UC Berkeley no longer have lifetime dues as they had previously, and both
have annual dues of $10. Berkeley
does not mail out newsletters to those who
fail to pay dues. UC Davis' dues are $25
annually (as are ours) but are voluntary.
Dues at UCSF and at UCSD are mandatory, and at UCSF emeriti are dropped
from the roles after two years of delinquency.
Program report: John
Swett has arranged for Arnold Starr to speak
on March 8 at 11:30 a.m. in the
President's Conference Room at Berkeley Place. His topic will be "Hearing but not
Understanding". Lunch will be
catered and the charge is to be $12. The
invitations should inform Emeritae/i that they may inform Audrey Wicks at 949-559-5990 or by e-mail
to emeriti@UCI.edu (who in turn will inform the
UCI Parking Office) one week in advance of
the meeting that they wish reduced-rate parking. The cost, but only with a reservation, is $3
for general parking in the Social Studies Parking Structure or $4 in the
parking lot surrounding the Berkeley Place
building.
John Swett
plans to contact Sherrie Kaplan,
Sheldon Greenfield, and Pamela Lawrence
for a talk on how best to communicate with one's physician for the spring
meeting.
Newsletter report: Bob
Montgomery stated the next newsletter
will have an excerpt (concerning the early days of the UCI
campus) from Renée Hubert's
book. The following newsletter
will have an article by Justin Call. Ron
Miller suggested, since our newsletter is
distributed electronically as well as by the US Postal Service, that if there
is more information to be conveyed than will fit in the printed newsletter
(without requiring additional postage) it could be posted on our UCIEA web site
and simply noted in the published version to be available on the Web.
Retiree's Association report: None given in the absence of Bobby
Brown.
Awards Committee report: The committee will meet immediately
following the Executive Committee meeting.
New Business: Julian
Feldman reminded us that the Medicare prescription benefits begin in 2006, and employers have the option of discontinuing drug
benefits, or continuing them through HMO or other insurance supplementary to
Medicare for retirees and emeritae on Medicare. If the University
of California elects to continue
providing drug benefits at a rate that meets or exceeds Medicare benefits standards,
the University would receive a 28% rebate.
Related memos of Gina Merriott and of Douglas
Haynes are to be circulated to the executive committee. Further information may be available from Tom
Rice, Professor at UCLA and from Michelle
French in the Office of the President.
Jerry Tobis
asked that the list of the 284 Emeritae who were members in 2002-2003 be
updated, and Lorie Reed
recommended we ask Ann Paden
since Benefits probably has the most accurate listing. Audrey Wicks stated condolence cards are sent
to spouses of deceased Emeritae/i with a reminder that they remain members of
the UCIEA. They receive our newsletter
as well. Kivie Moldave asked that those
with information to update the list please inform Audrey Wicks. Julian Margolis noted that the ZIP code for
University Hills (faculty housing) has changed from 92612 to 92617,
and the list needs updating.
Kivie Moldave
sent a letter to new Emeritae/i encouraging
them to attend meetings of the UCIEA including the Executive Committee
meetings. In addition, members of the
Executive Committee should invite emeritae/i to
attend.
Lyman Porter
was unable to attend today, but reported that there have been three applicants
for the part-time manager position for the recently approved Retirement
Center. Interviews are to be conducted soon.
Kivie Moldave
campus welfare committee stated
that he, Julian Feldman,
and Jerry Tobis
would attend the campus
welfare committee meeting next week.
He stated there has been concern about restricting eligible sources of
funding for research, continuing concern about a disparity in salaries of men
and women on the faculty (the disparity less for recent hires), and concern
about prescription benefits as well.
