The meeting was
called to order by the Chair, Lyman Porter at
1) Minutes were approved as presented.
2) Treasurer’s
Report: Lorie Reed announced the balance
in the foundation account is $1755. The academic account is close to zero, with
upcoming salary expense. Outstanding is
the cost of the Newsletter and the June meeting. The corrected bill for the December party at
the University Club has not yet been received.
Reed suggested we begin to work on a budget, whereby monies will be
allotted for programs.
3) Program Report: Only 15 reservations have been received so
far for the June luncheon next week. Martin
Wattenburg, a young political science professor will speak.
At this point a presentation was made by Anne Paden, UCI Human Resources. Paden informed the group of a six series retirement program designed to accommodate potential retirees. The retirees supplied $3,000 for this endeavor. Paden was seeking support and suggestions from the Emeritae/i. The programs took place in successive weekly slots, there were three choices of time each week. A schedule was provided outlining the subject matter. Participants 50 years of age and older with seven years of UC service were invited to attend any or all meetings and were entitled to bring a guest. Approximately 120 persons attended, including about 20 faculty. Paden displayed a handbook that has been provided to recent retirees. The plan for this series is expected to be offered biannually. Some of the suggestions by the group were: Kivie Moldave offered to publish notice of the next series in the Emeritae/i Newsletter. Justin Call questioned the availability of the speakers after the programs. A more detailed description of the modules was suggested by Moldave. Sub-topics could be introduced. Ann Heiney suggested a paragraph describing each module, rather than just a heading. Reed said people need to know why they need to think about these subjects, for example that those relying on Health Net will need to change to another benefit. Porter suggested a panel of annuitants who might make suggestions, Paden said that was considered and revoked. Bob Montgomery suggested a talk about the new Medicare Prescription card. Paden said she has heard the card is not very beneficial to UC annuitants. Paden offered to write an article for the next Newsletter. Two more retirement counselors are being added to the UCI staff. A party for retirees was discussed, but it was decided each department’s celebration probably would suffice
4) Newsletter Editor: The Spring Newsletter was mailed and one article is on hand for the next issue. Justin Call offered to write an article for the fall Newsletter.
5) Report of Retiree’s Association: In the absence of Bobbie Brown, there was no report.
6) Report of the Awards Committee: In the absence of Jerry Tobis, there was no report.
New Business: Porter
distributed an email he received requesting our mailing list for a benefit to
be held at the Barclay Theater in October featuring Bill Cosby. I was decided that although we would not
supply our list, we would label invitations that have already had postage
applied.
There being no
further business, the meeting was adjourned at
