/I  ASSOCIATION  MINUTES
MEETING:   May 5, 2003  

 
Present 
Ann Heiney, Judd and Renée Hubert, Isabelle Hunt, Sam McCulloch, Kivie Moldave, Lyman Porter, Lorie Reed, Ann Stephens, John Swett and Dennis Clark
 
The meeting was called to order by Chair Lyman Porter at 9:15 am.
                        
I.    Minutes of April 14th meeting:  The minutes of the April 14th meeting were approved as read.
 
II.   Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Kivie Moldave reported a balance of $2,893.03 as of March 31st. The expenses of the last month were $999 which included the University Club charges for the social event of January 14th, the holiday social in December and mailing expenses.
 
III.  Program Committee Report: Ann Stephens reported that the General Meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 18th from 5 to 7 pm. in the library room of the University Club. The event will be co-sponsored by the Chancellor's Club which will mail invitations at their expense. Jean Aldrich will speak about the beginnings of UCI, Mitch Spann will show a film on the opening of the campus, and Richard Demerjian (Director of campus and environmental planning) will speak on the future of the physical development of the campus. 'Heavy' hors d'oeuevres will be provided. All members will be e-mailed before the invitations are sent.
 
IV.   Newsletter Report:   John Swett has not yet received any response from the previous issue of the newsletter sent out last month.  An article has been received from Isabelle Hunt for a future publication.  Swett received a round of applause for his work.
 
 V.   Retirees’ Association Report Dennis Clark reported that the Retirees Association sent a mailing to inform annuitants of the memorial service planned for Leon Schwartz.  The annual recognition meeting for new retirees will be held  June 24th at the University Club at 1 pm. The Chancellor will present certificates at 3 pm.
 
VI.   Brochure Review:   Isabelle Hunt reported that the brochure is being printed at this time.  It is presumed it will be available for distribution at the June 24th meeting.   (There was a round of applause for Ann Stephens.)
 
VII.  New Business: Porter reported about the recent CUCEA meeting held at Berkley. It was announced by representatives from the Office of the President that health care plan costs will again be going up next year Information about specific rates for 2003-04 will not be available until September or October. The Regents Treasurer reported that the assets in the retirement fund earned 0% between 7/1/02 and 4/29/03. Currently, UCRS is over-funded at 138% of actuarial liability (as of 6/30/02). An annual study showed that of 123 statewide public pension plans throughout the US, three of which are located in California, UC ranked sixth in the latest survey (based on data through June 30, '02) in terms of funding percent in relation to obligations. The COLA increase this year will be 2%. Porter reported on a discussion at CUCEA concerning a new association entitled AROHE: Association of Retirement Organizations in Higher Education. A decision on whether our UCI Emeritae/i Association should join at a dues of $100/year was tabled until further information could be obtained about the new association.
