Special Senate Committee on Diversity (SSCD)

Note:  At the request of the members of the 2008-09 Special Senate Committee on Diversity, the Senate Cabinet unanimously approved the proposal to disestablish the Special Senate Committee on Diversity at its meeting on July 14, 2009. The duties of the Special Senate Committee on Diversity have been transferred to The Council on Faculty Welfare (CFW) and the Council on Student Experience (CSE). CFW's Subcommittee on Affirmative Action and Diversity will assume the responsibility for the oversight of faculty diversity, and the Council on Student Experience will assume the responsibility for the oversight of student diversity.

Responsibilities:

The Special Senate Committee was formed during 2005-06 by Senate Cchair Kenneth Janda in response to the University Committee on Affirmative Action and diversity's recommendation for Local Diversity Committee Empowerment. The Special Committee met for three years: 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09.

At it meeting on June 2, 2009, the members voted to forward a proposal to disestablish the Special Senate Committee on Diversity. The Council on Faculty Welfare’s Subcommittee on Affirmative Action will assume oversight for faculty diversity and the Council on Student Experience (CSE) will assume oversight for student diversity. The Special Committee was successful in encouraging a number of other changes in diversity related procedures to enhance the oversight of diversity and members of the SSCD concluded that the Special Committee had completed its charge.

The 2006 charge to the committee included: 
  • Review of diversity Issues  related to faculty and students,
  • Receiving and Initiating Studies,
  • Reporting to the Assembly and Councils, Administration, and Campus,
  • Coordinating Senate Responses on Diversity, and
  • Promoting Diversity as a University Value

Membership:
The Committeel consisted of the Senate Chair, the Director of the ADVANCE Program, and one representative from each of the Senate councils. Graduate and undergraduate student representatives are welcomed when available.
