Single Investigator Grants

Council on Research Computing and Libraries - CORCL

Single Investigator Innovation Grants
Program Guidelines

The Academic Senate Council on Research, Computing and Libraries (CORCL) established the Single Investigator Innovation Grants program to support the research and scholarship of UCI Academic Senate faculty, with an emphasis on recognizing and supporting innovative research projects of exceptional promise. Between five and ten grants will be awarded to Academic Senate members, in amounts up to $9,000, depending on the number and quality of the applications. Award recipients are required to submit a brief final report on their findings and expenditures. (See http://www.ap.uci.edu/APP/1-20_titles.html for Senate titles.) Faculty serving on the CORCL as Academic Senate members may not apply for this grant.

Evaluation Criteria:

The Single Investigator Innovation Grants support:
  • new research projects of junior faculty;
  • exploratory work by senior faculty that is not currently funded; or
  • meritorious research in areas that do not typically receive external funding.
Proposals will be evaluated in terms of:
  • The quality and potential impact of the proposed research or scholarly activity,
  • The applicant's academic and professional record,
  • The significance of the proposed work to the applicant's field of study,
  • The appropriateness of the budget requested for the tasks proposed, and
  • The opportunities created by the award for future funding of the research (in fields where extramural funding possibilities exist).
Only one proposal per Senate member will be accepted for the Single Investigator Innovation grant program per competition. Preference will be given to projects that have not been funded previously. Previous recipients of Single Investigator Innovation grants are not eligible for another three years.

Although discouraged, summer salary and teaching buy-outs will be considered under exceptional circumstances.

Budget:

Single Investigator Innovation grants may be used for whatever purpose, within University policies, the grantee believes will best aid his/her research effort. The budget request may include research assistance, materials and equipment not otherwise available, travel and field expenses associated with gathering data, and other categories as determined by the investigator. Funds are to be expendedby June 30 of the academic year following the application.

This grant program is designed to help advance the reasearch of UCI faculty and to that end, graduate student researcher support may be requested; however, the program is not intended to support graduate student dissertation research per se.

If equipment is requested, it is expected that the costs will be shared with the applicant's school or department. Equipment requests should be justified in the body of the proposal, and a letter of commitment from the appropriate dean or chair outlining the amount and nature of the matching funds should accompany the application.

Applications:

Proposals should be clear, concise, and written as jargon-free as possible so that they are comprehensible to scholarly readers in a variety of disciplines. If research involves human or animal subjects, or rDNA, funding will be contingent on approval of the protocol by the IRB, IACUC, and/or IBC.

Proposal packets should be ordered as follows (no staples please):

  • Application Form including itemized budget and budget justification.
  • Abstract (limit to one page, on a separate sheet).
  • Research narrative (up to 5 pages, not including reference; 1" margins; no smaller than 11pt. font)
  • Curriculum vita (up to 4 pages)
  • If equipment is requested, documentation of cost-sharing by the applicant's Chair or Dean is required.

Send original and five copies of complete proposal and one additional copy of the abstract to: Michelle AuCoin, Academic Senate Office, 3700 Berkeley Place South, ZOT 1325. Also, send a pdf file of the entire application to maucoin@uci.edu.

The deadline for submission of proposals is May 1 by 5:00 P.M. (If May 1 falls on a weekend, proposals will be accepted until 5:00 P.M. on the following Monday.) Late submissions will not be accepted. CORCL will not consider proposals from previous recipients of CORCL grants who have not submitted final reports.

Applicants will be notified by June 1.
